I'll preface this by saying I'm not directly related to the Hebert line. However, many of my cousins are Heberts through Catherine Morrisey. Additionally, Roberta Morrisey, from whom I got a large part of the information on the Morrisey and related lines, showed a keen interest in the Heberts, so I feel a debt to continue the research she started, at least to some extent.
In her booklet, Roberta has this to say about the line:
The Hebert line is French and the ancestry of George Henry Hebert is only known as far back as his father, at this time. Efforts to obtain records from their origin have met with failure, so far, and a report says those were lost in a fire of the church some years ago. Further research is being done however. George's father was FRANCOIS HEBERT who was from Three Rivers (Trois-Rivieres), Quebec, Canada and migrated to Joliet--whether direct or not is not known--and he served in the Civil War, died in Joliet, Ill., and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery there. He m. GENEVIEVE LARRIVIER (it is spelled Larabee in a government document, but indications are that the french spelling is likely the correct one). Genevieve was reportedly born in France but if so she migrated to Canada, and also came to Joliet and died there--date unknown, but abt. 1858 probably. Information from Mrs. Lorraine Harlow of Rocky Hill, Conn. (who is interested in both these families) lists a Mathilda Hebert of St. Michael, Yamaska, Canada who m. a Joseph Lariviere on 23 Feb. 1946. This would suggest possible relationship, but Francois told his son George that he had no brothers or sisters! Because of several circumstances in family history this may or may not be accurate, but they could be cousins of course. Francois died in 1871 (see p. 11a!)**. The war records of Francois indicate that he was born in 1818, and was 44 years old at the time of his discharge in 1862 after 1 year's service. Apparently his wife died in 1858. He and Genevieve were married in Canada and had 3 children before they came to the USA and 2 were born in this country. Data on the first 3 was primarily obtained from the 1880 Census and is assumed to be correct, but not guaranteed without further verification.
A good deal of Roberta's information is now in dispute. Records likely related to the line, going back to the 1600s, have been located by George Hebert. It would seem that this Genevieve's real surname was Larrive, and that she was in fact born in Canada.
Since their arrival in the United States, the Heberts have a long history of defending their country. Heberts have served in at least the Civil and First World wars. One such story is related below.
Two Joliet girls are scheduled to put in the plug that will connect the allies with the peace plea of Berlin. From ringing the persistent telephone bell in Joliet to starting the trench signals going, is to be the achievement of two feminine patriots of Joliet.
Miss Catherine Hebert and Miss Ethel Burnham have won the title of two of the bravest and most patriotic girls in Joliet. They have volunteered for overseas service in the communication department and will leave for France on or about Dec. 15.
A call came from Washington, D. C., thru the Chicago office of the Chicago Telephone company, for ten young women for overseas service. That office communicated with branch exchanges, asking for volunteers. The Joliet quota was two.
A. H. White, manager of the local office of the telephone company, read the communication to the women employed here, and Miss Hebert and Miss Burnham pleaded to be allowed to go.
I never was more proud of any two people in my life, said Mr. White. They are the best, bravest and finest girls in Joliet; that is my opinion of them.
They have taken examinations in Chicago and passed successfully. They were placed on the government payroll, and will recieve $6 a day for 30 days, and after that $4 a day. According to government orders they will not be called for overseas duty before Dec. 15, and in the interim will remain in the employ of the local office. In France they will be toll, or long distance operators, and will be stationed in warehouses or communication points behind the lines.
Miss Hebert is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Hebert, 801 South Desplaines street. She was born in Joliet, Oct. 8, 1893, and attended the Sacred Heart school. She has been in the employ of the Chicago Telephone company for two years. Miss Hebert has a brother in service, Sergt. George S. Hebert, stationed in Newport News, Va. She also has one sister, employed in Joliet.
Miss Burnham lives at 204 West Allen street. She was born in Joliet, Feb 2, 1894, and attended the public schools. She has been in the employ of the telephone company for seven years. Her only immediate relatives are two sisters and one brother.
Both young women are skilled workers and have fulfilled all requirements for overseas service.
To be eligible for government service in this branch women must be between 23 and 33 years of age, have at least two years experience in operating a switchboard, and similar work, be recommended by their company, and pass the examination successfully.
(Sean Ryan, who owns a copy of this newspaper article and forwarded the scan of it to me, says that Catherine and Ms. Burnham ended up not having to go to the front, after all.)
